Sam Mussomeli and Terry Redmond had an extra lucky St. Paddy’s Day. The duo celebrated getting approved for their liquor license for their new brewery, BabyCat Brewery.

Now after submitting their plans to the county, booking a contractor and ordering most of their equipment, Mussomeli and Redmond plan to occupy the physical space real soon.

“We’ll take possession of the property probably in mid-April,” Mussomeli said. “Everything is kind of line with moving forward very quickly.”

Mussomeli moved from Pittsburgh to Kensington for work in 2013 and fell in love with the “cool, quaint, unique little town.” However, the beer businessman noticed a major market gap that needed to be filled.

“We do believe that people were kind of seeking out these a little more eclectic, like hometown-feeling places rather than like the town centers and the newly built cookie cutter stuff,” he said.

So Mussomeli and Redmond saw the perfect opportunity to strike liquid gold, and thus, BabyCat was born.

The brewery will be the first of its kind in Kensington as it will feature a large green space perfect for people to kick off their shoes and enjoy a beer while taking in the natural scenery.

BabyCat is also situated about 30 feet away from an active railway line which Redmond said will give the space a little something extra.

“We get commuter trains, we get transport trains, all kinds of cool activity that happens,” he said. “I do feel like that'll give us kind of a cool uniqueness and something you simply won't get at most of the breweries.”

Through it all, the duo has focused on creating the best brewery for the Kensington community. They have even reached out to local artists, musicians and restauranteurs to strut their stuff as well.

“We will be very community-oriented, community-driven and I think that that uniqueness will also play a role,” Redmond said.

“It’s not a hype brewery,” Mussomeli added. “This is a community spot and it’s giving Kensington the brewery that it deserves.”

BabyCat will be located at 10241 Kensington Parkway and is expected to open to the public in the fall. You can keep up with the brewery by following them on FacebookInstagram or going online to their website
